THE UNSACRED HEARTS - Shine Out in the Wild Silence - Songs of David Berman (2021) EP
With a little help from Wild Kindness Records and Totally Real Records, the Unsacred Hearts have recently issued a new EP called Shine Out in the Wild Silence which is 5 song collection of Silver Jews/Purple Mountains covers written by the late great David Berman. The Hearts are my best friends. We grew up together and have made music together since our teens. I’m the drummer. Berman’s passing was very sad.
I’m proud to say this EP is another marvelous product of pandemic era remote-record-production. We weren’t able to convene much during its creation. We started together a little bit pre-pandemnic but we mostly did it all independently. Thanks to the immeasurably gifted Annie Nero for lending her voice once again. Special thanks to Jamal Ruhe for magical mastering.

PS Totally Real also included one of our songs on their TRR Mix Vol. 1 Compilation. Here’s a link to the previously unreleased song Look Cool (with Chris Buckridge on bass) which we probably recorded in 2011.

Shine Out in the Wild Silence is a heartfelt tribute to the late, great David Berman who died in 2019. He made songs brimming with wisdom, beauty, pain, hope, and humor. Longtime devotees, The Hearts, like so many others, were crushed when they learned of his death. In an effort to release that sorrow through an exercise of tribute, the band began work on recording their own interpretations of some of Berman's most immediate pieces. The five-song collection spans the Berman songbook, from the early Silver Jews classic “Trains Across the Sea” (Starlite Walker, 1994) to the late heartbreaker “All My Happiness is Gone,” (Purple Mountains, 2019) as well as venerable Berman chestnuts “Slow Education,” “Random Rules,” and “The Wild Kindness.”
Since the sharp-edged punk oddness of their 2002 self-titled debut, The Unsacred Hearts have continued to explore rock n roll in their own poetic & ramshackle way. Shine Out in the Wild Silence follows 2019’s City to Sea, a record of distorted formalism that blended the classic rock radio of the Hearts’ Long Island youth with the band's unique garage rock charge & art-punk ethos.
